GEORGE JONES

Often referred to as “the greatest living country singer.” Born in 1932 in Eastern Texas to an alcoholic father and an “extremely patient” mother. he first started playing music on the street as a kid. His first number one country hit was “white lightening” 1959. In ‘61 he hit #1 two times, once with “she thinks I still care” and again with “tender years”. “ He married four times, including one time to Tammy Wynette with whom he sang many duets (We’re not the jet set etc). Prized as a duet partner, he charted singles between 1978 and 2001 with James Taylor, Johnny Paycheck, Merle Haggard, Ray Charles, Brenda Lee, Lacy J. Dalton, Shelby Lynne, Randy Travis, Sammy Kershaw, Alan Jackson and Garth Brooks. To date (including his duets), Jones has had 13 No. 1’s and 30 Top 5s.

In 1980 he sang one of the single greatest country songs of all time, “He stopped loving her today”.

George Jones was famous not only for his somber, cooing voice, but also for his notoriously intense drinking and cocaine problem,  Jones’s alcoholism was legendary He was often penniless and admits that Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash came to his financial aid. In 1979 he missed a record of 50 concerts, winning him the nickname “no show” and throughout the ‘80’s he battled his addiction with varying success, often with the help of court orders. Finally in 1999 he had a final car crash and an empty bottle of vodka was found at the scene. Apparently that did the trick and he cleaned up his act. He lived to write his autobiography “I lived to tell about it.”

These are just a few of the songs that honor the legend of George Jones!
